The 1890 Liberty Head $5 Half Eagle is an undeniable key date within the late-date Philadelphia issues, representing the lowest mintage gold coin of the year across all denominations, with just 4,240 circulation strikes minted. This PCGS MS62 CAC-certified example ranks among the finest known, with only 15 pieces graded at this level and just 4 receiving CAC approval, with 1 CAC-certified example known in higher grade—firmly placing this coin within the Condition Census. With a survival estimate under 400 coins in all grades, true Mint State representatives like this are exceptionally rare and seldom offered. The obverse glows with a medium-gold base, enriched by buttercup-yellow and soft honey-gold accents, while apricot and amber toning gently frames the protected areas, giving the piece a warm, original complexion. Luster is frosty, with a smooth cartwheel effect. Light abrasions are well within expectations for the grade, but the coins eye appeal is truly spectacular. No recent CAC sale is noted in this or finer grade; however several grades lower in AU58 CAC examples frequently trade between $2,600 - $3,800 even in AU55 PCGS CAC they have sold for between $2,600-$2,900. Considering that only 1 CAC is finer at MS64 and no CAC sale has taken place in 6 years at MS62, we believe this an excellent purchase with room for appreciation, and that the Price Guides are low on this coin.
