This remarkable 1889 Liberty Seated Half Dollar, graded MS66 by PCGS and endorsed by CAC, represents one of the finest surviving examples from a mintage of just 12,000 pieces. Struck during the waning days of an era defined by sharply curtailed production due to the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, the 1889 issue is notable not just for its low mintage, but also for its exceptional scarcity in Mint State grades. Fewer than 15 coins have been certified at the MS66 level by PCGS, and none have been graded higher than MS66+, including only 5 approved at CAC and none finer. This Premium Gem is an especially captivating specimen, displaying robust satiny luster beneath a halo of cobalt-blue, lavender, and golden-russet toning that encircles both obverse and reverse. The cartwheel effect is immediate and dramatic under a light source, a testament to the coin's undisturbed original surfaces. A single mark in the right field holds the grade back if not this would be a MS67. The CAC Price Guide lists the MS66 value at $11,000, while no MS66 CAC have sold since 2022. Most recently, a non-CAC blast white example sold for $8,400 08/24 ST. Considering this coins' eye appeal, quality and color, we find this representing excellent value, and can see this sell for more.
