Following a five-year hiatus, the New Orleans Mint resumed the minting of ten-dollar pieces, with a particular emphasis on silver dollar production. The 1888-O Liberty Gold Eagle piece emerged with a limited emission of only 21,335 pieces. A notable portion of these coins found their way into foreign bank vaults, where they were preserved for their bullion content. Those that did not get shipped overseas likely met the fate of being melted, indicating a lack of widespread circulation for these coins. The survival rate of this mintage is a mere 1,150 pieces, and this coin stands out as the single finest CAC Gold sticker example which is also housed in an OGH PCGS older holder. It holds significance for collectors interested in Liberty Gold Eagles with Motto, especially for type and registry set enthusiasts. Being more affordable than earlier examples, this date typically comes well struck with appealing natural coloration. Boasting a delightful honey-gold hue and retaining ample granular mint luster, the present specimen showcases a CAC Gold sticker. Its originality is evident in an untouched and well-preserved state, displaying only faint marks and slight toning consistent with a higher grade. Notably, a PCGS AU58 example without CAC Gold endorsement sold for $4,080 08/23 ST, which was likely undergraded as well. Additionally, the last PCGS MS62 transaction fetch for $3,480 01/24 HA.
