1886 1C VARIETY 2 PR65 RB PCGS CAC

The 1886 Indian Head Cent of the Variety 2 logotype represents the more elusive of the two date styles for the year, identified by the distinct spacing between the final digit of the date and the lower curve of the bust. Struck from a Proof mintage of just 4,290 pieces, this PCGS-certified PR65 RB example, additionally confirmed by CAC, aligns with the upper tier of surviving specimens. The most recent CAC-approved PR65 RB traded for $1,620 01/24 HA for a non-toned example, whilst more recently a non-CAC more attractive example sold for $1,680 09/25 SB. This example has both both the CAC and an unbelievably attractive green hue seldom seen on Indian Head Pennies. The mirrored fields remain notably clear and undisturbed, with no haze or clouding interrupting the light flow across the reflective plane. The devices are sharply executed, particularly the fine feather. The layered, slow-developed toning and smooth, unbroken surface structure indicate stable long-term preservation rather than rapid color formation.
