The 1885 Gold Dollar represents one of the most visually captivating and technically accomplished proof issues of late 19th-century United States gold coinage. Graded by PCGS and housed in an early Old Green Rattler Holder with CAC approval, this extraordinary gem exemplifies the perfect blend of craftsmanship, rarity, and aesthetic excellence. With an original mintage of 1,105 pieces and a survival estimate of roughly 225, this date is among the most desirable in the entire Gold Dollar proof series. The Philadelphia Mint’s proof gold production during this period achieved a level of precision and artistry rarely equaled, and this coin serves as a shining example of that achievement. Liberty’s portrait is exceptionally well defined, with each feather of the intricate headdress and every facial contour rendered in frosty detail. The depth of the mirrors is remarkable—smooth, reflective, and glasslike—contrasting dramatically with the soft, matte frost of the design elements. The rims are sharply struck and uniformly golden, completing the coin’s harmonious appearance with refined balance. All in all, this example produces a cameo effect even though the coin predates PCGS’s formal Cameo designations for proofs from what we know they started doing so in the early 1990's where as this was graded in the late 1980's. CAC has approved only two at this grade with none finer in this designation.
