Shield Nickel
The 1883/2 Shield Nickel graded MS63 by PCGS and approved by CAC, housed in a desirable Generation 3.1 Old Green Holder, is a sharply detailed and original example of this popular overdate variety. Both obverse and reverse exhibit bright, satiny luster over a smooth silver base, accented by subtle pastel iridescence that shifts between pale gold, soft blue, and faint lavender tones near the peripheries. On the obverse, the shield is boldly defined, with crisp vertical and horizontal line detail and clear separation in the ornamental scrollwork and leaf clusters, while the motto above remains sharp against lightly reflective fields. The reverse displays a strong, well-centered numeral 5 with fully articulated stars and legends, and the overdate feature remains evident beneath magnification, adding to the coin’s technical and historical appeal. Light, grade-appropriate contact marks are present but do not distract from the overall eye appeal, and the strike is firm across both sides with excellent detail for the MS63 level. Clearly this is better than a MS63 by todays standard. With a CAC population of just 7 approved in this grade and 12 finer, and a PCGS Price Guide valuation of $3,500, this Old Green Holder example represents a carefully selected and visually pleasing representative of this scarce overdate issue.
