Proof Morgan Dollars are expensive and pricey in all dates. The 1883 Morgan Dollar proofs has a total mintage of only 1,039 pieces and is of equal rarity to other proof Morgans in the mid 80's. A virtually flawless example that is completely mark-free save for a slight minute reeded mark on the cheek of the Liberty, which would make sense for an example in higher grade if that were the only mark as this case. It is an uber original piece and what typically happens to these Morgan Dollars are that they are dipped to come up to a PR66, but become black and white and if they have toning are never seen with rainbow peripheral toning such as this. Here is an absolutely original proof toned morgan which is immaculate and exhibits extravagant rainbow hues with sandy and sunshine yellow, teal, azure, deep violet, carmine red, and sunset yellow complimenting the obverse peripherally. The reverse is decorated with blue ocean, arctic blue, slight dark violet and sandy yellow hues. The most comparable auction record is for a toned 1884 $1 PR65 PCGS CAC that sold for $9,600 03/23 ST, while a subpar but original 1883 $1 PR65+ PCGS CAC sold for $9,000 03/23 ST. A quick glance to the toning of those aforementioned example to this will demonstrate the vast difference. A gorgeous example and one sure to be a prized possession that delivers captivating eye appeal to even those not familiar in numismatics or coin collecting.
