The 1882 Seated Liberty Half Dollar is an exceptional condition rarity, distinguished by its low mintage of just 4,400 business strikes. With approximately 800 surviving examples across all grades, this issue ranks among the rarest in the Liberty Seated Half Dollar series. High-grade specimens are exceedingly scarce, and this coin, with a CAC population of 2 and only 3 finer at CAC. The obverse features a soft silver-gray base tone, beautifully accented by a radiant spectrum of gold, orange, and yellow along the rim, transitioning into violet, blue, and green hues. The figure of Liberty is framed by a warm golden tint, sharply detailed with a satin-like texture across the fields. The reverse shows peripheral toning of gold, orange, and red, transitioning to violet, teal, and blue near the edges, with muted silver tones and golden highlights in the center. No auction record exists for this grade, whilst two grades lower MS64 CAC have been consistently selling for $4,000-$4,500. Compared to similar dates like 1881 a much more common example where MS66 PCGS CAC have sold for $8,000-$10,000, and 1885 50c which is also more common where the last MS66 PCGS CAC sold for $11,162 02/23 LE, or a 1886 50c which is also more common where a MS66 PCGS CAC sold for $9,600 06/21 HA, safe to say this example with its eye appeal and toning, lower mintage and lower number of survivors by a factor of 2, should sell for much more. With a CAC Price Guide today of $9,250, dynamic toning, low mintage and top end of the condition census, this example we find represents strong value and dare we say is undervalued.
