This 1881-S Morgan Silver Dollar is an extraordinary Deep Mirror Prooflike (DMPL) example, showcasing the San Francisco Mint’s legendary production quality at its absolute finest. Both obverse and reverse exhibit jet-black, deeply mirrored fields with exceptional reflectivity, creating dramatic contrast against the thick, satiny frost blanketing the design elements. Liberty’s portrait is razor-sharp with a flawless cheek, while the eagle’s breast feathers and wings are crisply rendered—testament to a bold, precision strike. Widely recognized as one of the most visually impressive Morgan Dollar issues, the 1881-S is available in high grades, but DMPL coins of this caliber remain conditionally rare. PCGS reports just 87 coins in MS66 DMPL with only 30 finer, while CAC lists only 18 in this grade with none higher. The most recent MS66 CAC sale sold in 2023 but that was for a toned example that did not have any remotely DMPL qualities we see or require. It is therefore important to buy the best and from a qualified dealer. A true CAC example prior to that toned example for 1881-S $1 MS66 DMPL PCGS CAC brought $7,800 04/22 ST which is a real point of reference. 1881-S $1 in true DMPL is exceptionally rare. In fact it is tougher with fewer number of survivors than the 1884-O $1 MS66 DMPL PCGS CAC which sold more recently for $5,760 05/25 HA, 1885 $1 and 1880-S $1. It is comparable to 1887 $1 DMPL which just sold in MS66 DMPL PCGS CAC 08/25 HA for $8,400. This coins quality will be sure to satisfy the most discerning, and has significantly more contrast than the 1887 $1.
