Liberty Head Eagle
The 1881-O Liberty Head Eagle stands out as the scarcest among the three low-mintage New Orleans eagles produced. All these eagles exhibit heavily abraded surfaces; however, we consider this a prime 'slider' example and can see this grade AU58+/MS61. The color of this eagle is a remarkably original attractive yellow-gold. It has earned CAC approval, a rarity for this date, especially considering that in all grades both CAC and non-CAC only 225 survivors are known to exist, with a PCGS estimate of 5 in UNC. The rarity of this date has been influenced by the repatriation of coins from overseas, although most of these examples tend to be excessively bag marked and lack CAC endorsement. No CAC comparable is available for this date. However, one grade lower an AU55 PCGS CAC sold for $7,800 08/23 SB, whilst two PCGS/CAC MS61s sold for an impressive $45,600 (August 2022) and $55,200 (April 2022). Since the beginning of 2020, only two PCGS AU58 1881-O eagles have been auctioned, and neither received CAC approval. As such, we believe this coin and grade represents strong value that frankly looks as good as the aforementioned examples.
