The Single Lowest Mintage Business Strike Three Dollars, 1881 $3 was struck with a mintage of just 500 pieces. Among the 500 struck, we are pleased to offer the single lowest graded example via a PCGS VF30. 1881 $3 despite a minuscule mintage is notable among numismatists due to an interesting story by a New York Dealer in the early 20th century. PCGS estimated roughly 300 examples are known today in all grades and the reason for the high attrition rate is thanks to New York Coin Dealer Thomas Elder who rescued most examples, or else close to none would be known today. Even in the lowest of grades VF30 with no PCGS sale ever PCGS estimates a Price Guide of $4,000, with the only relevant comp an inferior NGC VF30 that sold via $3,600 08/22 ST. Most examples are typically seen with proof-like surface and cleaned; however, the offered example posses honey gold color imbued with luster scattered in the protected areas. Evenly worn and highly sought after by collectors in all grades. The most distinctive feature of this coin is the surface which has not been stripped of like other comparable examples for this date. Overall a superb example for the Lowest Mintage $3.
