This 1880 Trade Dollar, certified PR65+ by PCGS and verified by CAC, is a profoundly impressive example of late 19th-century U.S. proof coinage—both technically elite and visually electrifying. Struck during the final official year of the Trade Dollar series from a limited mintage of just 1,987 coins, this survivor stands firmly in the upper echelon of known specimens, with a PCGS population of just four at this grade and only 22 finer with CAC approval. Far from the muted, lifeless toning often associated with aging proofs, this coin radiates with intensely vivid, album-induced color. Both sides are alive with deep, saturated hues—ribbons of electric cobalt-blue, aquamarine, and rich violet interlace with gold, rose, and pale navy in a visually dynamic display. These are not subdued or passive colors; they are fresh, lively, and deeply reflective, suggesting optimal long-term preservation in an album environment that encouraged controlled, elegant toning. The mirrored fields are notably strong and uninterrupted, offering glass-like reflectivity that leaps from beneath the color when angled in hand. We strongly believed this was a CAM but apparently not. The clarity and depth of the proof mirrors are remarkable—easily visible even at arm’s length and absent the hazing or disruptions so common in coins of this vintage. With a survival estimate of just 1,400 pieces, the 1880 proof Trade Dollar is scarce in any grade. But examples of this caliber—original, boldly toned, and certified PR65+ with CAC endorsement—are genuinely rare. No sale of a PR65+ CAC exists; however, typical PR65 CAC sell for $7,500 with muted colors, but when PR65+ PCGS CAC are offered and with collectors these fetch much higher. The current PCGS Price Guide lists PR65+ at $10,000. No example has sold recently, however in terms of mintage and rarity, a 1879 T$1 OGH PR65 PCGS CAC that sold for $10,200 08/25 HA is closest, except this coin has more color and cameo surface as well with a plus grade.
