On October 15, 1877, Treasury Secretary John Sherman instructed the Philadelphia Mint and New York Assay Office to halt Trade dollar deposits, later extending this order to the San Francisco and Carson City mints. Although the order was rescinded two weeks later, a final directive in February 1878 permanently ended business strikes. While the San Francisco and Carson City mints had already released 1878-dated Trade dollars, the Philadelphia Mint struck only 900 proofs, making the 1878 Trade dollar a rare issue with few survivors. Featuring a GEM Proof example with beautiful, original toning, the 1878 Trade dollar is scarce in this Cameo grade, with a population of just 5 examples at this level and only 13 finer. Produced primarily for numismatists of the time, few examples remain as pristine as this one. With a Price Guide of $9,750, the most recent auction comp for PCGS was for a 1879 T$1 PR65 CAM PCGS which sold for $7,500 05/24 HA and for a NGC - a 1879 T$1 PR65 CAM NGC for $6,900 01/25 HA.
