1878-S $2.5 MS64+ PCGS CAC
1878-S $2.5 MS64+ PCGS CAC
Liberty Head Quarter Eagle
1878 San Francisco struck Quarter Eagles. Approximately 3,500 exists today in all grades. Most of the survivors are in AU grade. 1878-S $2.5 becomes a Condition Census at MS64. At MS64+ this coin is a Pop 3 with only 3 finer all in MS65. 1878-S $2.5 from our experience has almost always come with poor eye appeal and subdued luster. The offered example has the typical satin-like subdued luster; however this should be placed in the context of how 1878-S $2.5 comes. Students of this series will know that this is an exceptional coin for the issue. Popular date and highly sought after in high grades. Only 2 other MS64+ are graded which have both sold for $4,320 06/19 HA ( a spotty example) and $5,040 06/18 HA. Finding an example finer especially CAC is impossible and will cost likely $30,000.
