1878-S $1 MS66 PCGS
Morgan Dollar
Certain S-mint dates are common to find with nice color, such as 1880-S or 1881-S. 1878-S, however, is challenging and seldom seen with toning. The present example not only has wonderful obverse rainbow color, but it is also fully toned on the reverse and is extremely clean at MS66. Dual-sided toners are substantially more rare than those with single-sided color, and to find one in such a high grade while also being a tougher date is quite special. The base PCGS price guide value is $1,100 for an untoned example. An MS64 dual-sided 78-S brought just over $2,500 in 2019. One in MS65 with excellent color brought nearly $4,000 two years ago. We feel the present example is a real bargain given the grade and color.
