1878 Morgan Silver Dollar (8 Tail Feather Variety) exhibits a radiant silver tone with a soft, frosty luster typical of high-quality Morgan Dollars. This particular example is of the 8 Tail Feather variety, the first reverse type produced before the error in the eagle’s tail feathers was corrected. The initial design mistakenly depicted the bald eagle with 8 tail feathers, an ornithological inaccuracy, as bald eagles naturally have 7 tail feathers. After this was pointed out, the reverse design was modified mid-year. Only 749,500 examples of the 8 Tail Feather variety were struck, making it a notable and highly sought-after sub-type in the Morgan Dollar series. The surface retains a satiny mint frost, amplifying the coin’s cartwheel luster under direct light, whilst light contact marks and abrasions, most noticeably on Liberty’s cheek, are consistent with the coin’s age and handling but remain unobtrusive to the overall eye appeal.
