With the inception of this issue, ten-dollar gold coin production at the Philadelphia Mint rose to levels not witnessed since before the Civil War. While the 1878 coin is obtainable but proves scarce when compared to numerous later-date issues of the same type where the number of survivors often go up to over 100,000. The survival estimate for this example is 700 out of a mintage of 73,780, compared to the near 3 million survivors for the common dates. This 1878 Liberty Gold Eagle, graded XF45 by PCGS, is CAC approved and has a population of only 1 in the assigned grade which happens to also be the lowest approved CAC example. This coin exhibits only honest wear and a vibrant rose-honey color. Liberty Gold Eagles dated from the 1870s are highly underrated, and finding one with CAC approval is almost impossible. There has been no recorded sale of a CAC example in this grade. No recent CAC sale has occurred since gold reached over $2,000. In fact with melt at approximately $1,100 this seems like a great value buy for a better date crusty CAC eagle.
