Liberty Head Eagle
The 1877-S Liberty Head Eagle has a survival estimate of only 237 from a low mintage of only 17,000 issues that circulated in a year when gold coins were very much commercially in demand in the West Coast. Survivors that came through as this specimen without marks that survived the turmoils of circulation which are seen heavily abraded are also always in demand regardless of their grade.
1877-S $10 is an undervalued piece as they are typically seen only in VF to XF grade range and not many know the rarity of the date. Nonetheless, AU specimens are difficult to come by with no Mint State certified by PCGS but 3 at NGC though likely 2 exist. This high end Motto issued survivor exhibits beautiful tangerine gold color with barely any wear. In our opinion, it is one of the finest 1877-S $10 in AU55. It has the characteristics of the San Francisco Mint with radiant luster while the strike detail is fair without any marks for its current grade. Although the reverse might be mistaken for wear, it is the detail of the strike which has been struck just soft, the obverse on the other hand, is without a doubt an AU58.
