JK-3. R.5 Type 1/1 with period - TDV-14 but priced as a Type Coin. The 1876 Trade Dollar marks a key moment when rising silver prices made it profitable to circulate these coins domestically, especially on the Pacific Coast. Initially meant for foreign trade, they soon flooded California markets and later spread eastward, entering everyday commerce nationwide despite their original purpose. The Philadelphia Mint struck 455,000 examples in 1876, with many entering domestic circulation before the Act of July 22, 1876, formally demonetized the denomination. Certified MS62 by PCGS and verified by CAC, this Type 1/1 with period - TDV-14 example is an exceptional survivor, a R.5 rarity, with full and complete E and F, on the reverse as well as die-crack under Trade and period after FINE, this coin has everything going for it. A R.5, toning, CAC and a great series. With rich, original toning, the obverse features a rich mix of antique silver and champagne-gold tones with subtle copper and violet highlights. Its satiny fields show soft luster, while darker olive-gray accents in recessed areas enhance the design’s depth. The natural, stable colors reflect careful preservation and long-term storage. The reverse shows richer colors, blending gold with touches of tangerine, amber, and pale magenta around the edges. The eagle is sharply detailed with frosted wings and shield, while the fields have a subtle, semi-prooflike shine beneath the toning. Both sides show exceptional eye appeal and originality, traits that are increasingly rare among Trade dollars at this level. With a Price Guide of $2,450 for the variety, a modest 10% premium over the normal type, Trade Dollar varieties have recently started to pick up in their varieties thanks to recent new publication. No CAC example has sold since 2013; however, the last non-CAC sold for $1,812 06/25 HA and prior $1,800 03/25 HA.
