Intensely lustrous with frosty texture, this 1876 Trade Dollar would be a standout addition to a Mint State type set representing the brief Trade dollar series. The coin features full, sharply struck star radials and intricate details on Liberty’s hair, enhanced by vibrant, satiny mint luster and light gold toning with hints of peripheral blue seen on the both sides of the edge. Exceptionally smooth for its assigned grade, this example offers excellent potential for a type or date set. This 1876 Trade Dollar has a survival estimate of just 2,500 in all grades from a mintage of under 450,000, compared to the more common 1876-S T$1 or 1877-S T$1 at over 5 and 9 million respectively. This Philly example is CAC-approved with a population of 7 and no doubt is undervalued when compared to its San Francisco peers. The last auction record was for $1,680 09/23 HA for a non-CAC example, whilst a more common 1877-S T$1 MS62 NGC CAC with similar peripheral toning sold for $1,920 06/23 HA, or a more common 1878-S T$1 MS62 PCGA CAC for $1,770 07/24 HA. An undervalued and attractive Trade dollar.
