This NGC 1876 Trade Dollar coin is CAC approved for both quality and eye appeal. Intensely lustrous with frosty texture, it would be a standout addition to a Mint State type set representing the brief Trade dollar series. The coin features full, sharply struck star radials and intricate details on Liberty’s hair, enhanced by vibrant, satiny mint luster and light gold toning with hints of peripheral blue. Exceptionally smooth for its assigned grade, this example offers excellent potential for a type or date set.

The 1876 Trade dollar saw a shift in usage due to legislative changes that year. The Act of April 17, 1876, authorized the Treasury to issue coins, yet circulation remained limited until the Act of July 22, 1876, which allowed Legal Tender notes to be exchanged for silver coins. This same act demonetized the Trade dollar domestically and restricted its use to international trade, primarily as export to China. While most Trade dollars struck early in 1876 were likely used domestically, later mintages were almost exclusively exported. This 1876 Trade Dollar has a survival estimate of just 2,500. This example is CAC-approved with a population of 7 and resides in an NGC OH Fatty holder.
