The 1876 Trade dollar was struck during the height of U.S. efforts to compete in international trade, primarily to facilitate commerce with Asia and support silver exports. This example represents a classic Philadelphia issue from the short-lived series, and this ANACS-certified AU55 “OH” Soap Box holder offers an especially appealing combination of originality, strike quality, and vibrant residual luster. With an estimated survival of approximately 2,500 pieces across all grades, it stands as a desirable representative for advanced type or Trade Dollar specialists. Both obverse and reverse display strong peripheral toning layered in hues of reddish-gold, rose, cobalt blue, and soft teal. Subtle iridescence gathers around the stars, legend, and denticles, accentuating the coin’s circular symmetry without obscuring detail. Gentle high-point friction is consistent, yet ample luster persists in protected areas and flashes attractively when rotated under light. The fields remain clean for the grade, free of distracting abrasions. Interestingly at first sight we thought this coin was a proof given the incredibly sharp details. No relevant comps are noted for a toned Trade Dollar, but more importantly try finding a superbly toned Trade Dollar under $10K and that isnt proof, and one realizes how tough these are.
