1876 was the year of the United States Centennial, a period marked by national celebration and renewed interest in American expansion and industry. Coins minted that year — especially from the Carson City Mint — reflect the growth of western mining economies and the role gold coinage played in supporting commerce during a time of rapid development.  The 1876-CC $5 Liberty Head graded G04 by PCGS in an Old Green Holder and approved by CAC, represents an exceptionally scarce Carson City half eagle with a mintage of just 6,887 pieces and an estimated survival of approximately 117 coins across all grades. Even in Good condition, this issue is seldom encountered, and the combination of OGH status and CAC endorsement further distinguishes this piece within a PCGS population of only 2 and CAC at 1 for this example. Both obverse and reverse display a rich, deeply original golden-amber coloration with darker copper-gold patina concentrated along the peripheries and around the devices. Naturally worn fields and devices show honest circulation consistent with the assigned grade. More importantly this coin is free from distracting damage, heavy rim issues, or impairments, resulting in an attractive, problem-free survivor that stands above typical G04 examples with serious claims to higher grades. There are only 27 CAC examples in all grades and the color is incredible.
