The 1876-CC $20 Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle is a hallmark of the Carson City Mint’s storied production of gold coinage during the mid-19th century. With a mintage of 138,441 pieces, this issue is highly sought after by collectors due to its historical significance and connection to the famed Nevada mint. Carson City double eagle production peaked in the 1870s, and survivors in AU grades are consistently in high demand. This PCGS AU53 example exhibits strong luster, well-defined devices, and excellent eye appeal for the assigned grade and has the look of an UNC coin. Only when observing very carefully the obverse fields will you see some hints of wear. The reverse looks uncirculated to us. We would not have bat an eye if this were in an AU58 grade. Perhaps a regrade is necessary. PCGS Price Guide currently values it at $6,750 and wholesale Greysheet Bid is at $4,600, with another PCGS AU53 is offered on the market for approximately $5,600. No AU53 recent comps are noted in 2025; however, a lower graded AU50 PCGS sold most recently sold for $4,560 02/25 HA and 3 NGC AU55 sold for $4,932-$5,280 01/25 HA. Acquired raw and just graded from a Las Vegas Collection.
