1874-S $5 AU53 PCGS CAC
1874-S $5 AU53 PCGS CAC
The 1874-S half eagle, with a mintage of just 16,000 coins, is a significant condition rarity, as all its mintage was released into circulation in the 19th century. Today, only 115 examples are estimated to survive. This CAC-approved piece is one of only three in its grade, with just five finer! Slightly rarer than the 1870-S and 1873-S, and comparable to the 1875-S, the 1874-S remains elusive in Mint State, making this AU example the finest realistically attainable for most collectors. The attractive orange-gold surfaces retain much of their original mint luster. Exceptional fields give it an uncirculated appearance with the light amount of circulation leaving no marks of consequence. This is a very choice smooth coin. CAC approved for both quality and eye appeal, it stands out as a top-tier example. A PCGS CAC example in AU55 sold for $7,800 08/22 ST, whilst a lower graded AU50 PCGS CAC sold for $6,900 04/22 ST, establishing a clear range for this premium AU53 PCGS CAC coin.
