A standout among the coins minted in the 1873 San Francisco Mint is the $10 Gold Liberty Eagle, representing the city's post-Gold Rush era. This coin serves as a tangible testament to San Francisco's pivotal role in shaping the nation's monetary history, as the gold coins produced in San Francisco contributed significantly to providing steady coinage for the nation. Encapsulated in a pristine OGH (Old Green Holder), this 1873-S $10 Gold Liberty Eagle PCGS VG08 is a unique piece that captures the essence of its time. Despite its grade, all distinguishable details are intact, and would grade easily in our opinion a Fine today. Remarkably, this is the lowest graded example for the date, with a non-CAC comparable selling three years ago for $1,560 for this Pop 2 PCGS Pop 1 CAC example. The surfaces of this coin exhibit wear consistent with its time in circulation, yet they remain free of noticeable marks or dings. The natural, unmolested coloration adds to its appeal. We consider these S mint Eagles undervalued in the current market context. Out of a mintage exceeding 12,000, only 82 examples are extant, with a mere 16 receiving CAC approval in all grades, highlighting their scarcity and contributing to their historical and numismatic significance.
