An exceptionally rare Carson City Mint half eagle, this 1873-CC $5 Liberty Head graded VG10 by PCGS and approved by CAC represents one of the great circulation rarities in the Liberty Head gold series. Struck from a tiny mintage of just 7,416 pieces, with an estimated 70 survivors in all grades, the issue ranks as the second-rarest Carson City half eagle, after 1870-CC $5, and is a formidable acquisition regardless of grade. Both sides display attractive, original honey-gold to warm orange-gold coloration with smooth, problem-free surfaces that have earned coveted CAC approval. Honest circulation has produced even wear across Liberty's portrait and the eagle while preserving bold peripheral legends, a full date, mintmark, and strong overall definition for the assigned grade. The fields retain an appealing, natural texture free from distracting impairments, giving the coin superior eye appeal compared with many survivors of this heavily circulated issue. Highly sought after by specialists in Carson City gold, Liberty Head half eagles, and advanced collectors of Western frontier coinage, the 1873-CC is an issue that is seldom encountered in any collectible grade. No CAC has sold and very few have been approved and are under $10K for this date.
