Two Cent
With a mintage of only 500, the 1873 Two Cent piece exists in two varieties: Open 3 and Closed 3. The Mint widened the 3 in the Open 3 variety to avoid confusion with the number 8. Gem Proof examples of both varieties are extremely scarce.
While traditional numismatic wisdom suggests that the Close 3 are originals and the Open 3 are restrikes, no evidence has been found to confirm this theory, adding to the intrigue of this Proof only issue. Nonetheless the Open 3 are still rarer than the Closed 3 version approximately two and a half times scarcer.
This stunning premium Choice Proof-63 specimen, the final year of the two-cent series, is a rare find. As a proof-only issue, it represents the last of this short-lived series and ranks among the finest in the Brown (BN) designation. The coin displays a natural patina with hues of light cerulean blue and russet brown, making it an exceptional and desirable example for collectors. CAC Price Guide $4,000 with significant upside.
