The 1873 Indian Head cent Doubled LIBERTY variety stands as one of the most dramatic varieties in the entire Indian cent series, widely regarded by specialists as the premier doubled variety of the type for the entire US coin series. Tied at the very top of the condition census as the Finest with one other at PCGS, this example has long been known as one of only two examples to achieve the GEM MS65 grade in any color and designation. More importantly, this example is the ONLY CAC GEM. A CAC POP 1/0 and PCGS 2/0. The doubling is immediately evident to the naked eye across Liberty’s portrait, particularly on the nose, mouth, eye, and the headdress feathers, with the strongest and most famous doubling appearing in the word LIBERTY on the headband. With about 25% Red, the obverse reveals rich original copper-red and warm brown coloration with subtle iridescent highlights shimmering across the fields. On the reverse, the wreath, shield, and ONE CENT legend are equally sharp, standing out against lustrous, finely textured copper surfaces that retain strong mint brilliance and a smooth, well-preserved appearance. With an estimated survival of only about 35 examples across all grades, this variety remains extremely elusive. The PCGS Price Guide lists a value of $65,000, while the CAC Price Guide lists $60,500, and notably no CAC-approved example has appeared in the auction record; though MS65 RB non-CAC have sold between $42,000-$66,000.
