The 1872 Liberty Head Double Eagle, struck at the San Francisco Mint, combines rarity, historical significance, and all the bells and whistle required by a modern collector. With a mintage of 780,000 and an estimated survival of just 4,782 coins of the original production remain. Certified in an OGH (Old Green Holder) with the distinguished Gold CAC sticker, it signifies exceptional quality and eye appeal. The obverse displays a vibrant yellow-gold hue accented by deeper orange-gold highlights in the recessed areas, particularly around Liberty’s hair, the stars, and the bold date “1872.” Clearly under-graded, this coin shows luster and full details for a strong AU candidate. With the price of gold hanging around $3,000, we believe this represents excellent upside with the OGH and GOLD-CAC and downside protected by the amount of gold. No relevant auction comps are noted, but CAC Guide is $3,500 for a normal Green Sticker in XF45.
