1871-CC $5 VG10 OGH PCGS CAC

One of the most under-graded Liberty $5 VG10 example we have seen. The 1871-CC Liberty Head Half Eagle was struck during the second year of operations at the Carson City Mint, when booming bullion deposits from Nevada's Comstock Lode increased production by more than 800% over the inaugural year, cementing Carson City's role in the coinage of the American West. Although more obtainable than the legendary inaugural 1870-CC Half Eagle, the 1871-CC remains a genuinely scarce issue in every grade with a modest mintage of just 20,770 pieces and an estimated surviving population of only 150 examples. This attractive VG10 PCGS CAC example, housed in a desirable Old Green Holder, is an exceptionally original survivor that offers outstanding eye appeal for the grade. In fact we have several VG10, F12 and F15 in the Virginia Range collection, and this has more detail and less wear than all those. We grade the coin F15. In fact compare another F15 NON-CAC sold for $4,636 06/26 HA. A nice but non-undergraded lower grade VG08 PCGS CAC sold for $3,904 01/26 HA. Warm honey-gold surfaces are complemented by subtle flint-gray and delicate pinkish-rose highlights that emerge under direct light, while the coin remains remarkably smooth for a well-circulated Carson City gold piece. CAC approval recognizes this piece as a premium-quality representative of the grade, while the added appeal of its early-generation Old Green Holder makes it especially desirable to collectors who appreciate conservatively graded coins.
