Under-rated P-Mint 1871 Half Eagle. From a minuscule mintage of 3,200 only 65-75 are known today in all grades and condition! Thick rich, honey-gold hue paints this original example on both sides. As most 1871 $5, the fields are frosty with some proof-like hints under lustrous surface. No wear is seen and the strike as one would hope from an AU58+ is full. The 1871 $5 like that of its other earlier P-Mint counterparts start a set of low mintage circulation strike half eagles starting from the Civil War era. This rare date is similar in overall rarity to the other early Motto issues of the late 1860s and early 1870s, all of which are incredibly rare and sought after with their sub 100 pieces survival rates. Hardly ever seen above XF, this GEM AU specimen is vastly superior to the common examples seen including some low-UNC examples. Among CAC-verified coins, none are graded finer than AU-58. There has been only 1 CAC sale at AU58 which was from the Fairmont Collection-Hendricks Set, that sold for $17,400. Here is an example finer with the coveted PLUS grade at AU58 with a PCGS Price Guide of $17,500, Condition Census, a PCGS POP 1 and with no APR ever.
