The 1870-S Liberty Head Half Eagle is a rare and highly coveted example of Reconstruction-era gold coinage, struck at the San Francisco Mint with a mintage of just 17,000 pieces. With only an estimated 85 survivors in all grades, this coin is a rarity in both condition and absolute terms. Heavy commercial use in post-Gold Rush California has contributed to its scarcity, making any surviving example an exceptional collector’s piece. This CAC-certified example boasts stunning golden-yellow tones accented by subtle amber highlights around Liberty’s hair and stars, with a satin-like texture and minimal abrasions that lend it an honest, circulated appearance. An important San Francisco Mint origin with a Dirty Old Gold look and some dirt between the devices for an extra dose or originality. Only 13 finer in CAC with the last CAC apr was over a decade ago for $3,172 04/2013 HA. This coin represents a lot of value for the price, and safe to say we believe this is one of the most undervalued S Mint Half Eagles.
