Liberty Head Double Eagle
The 1870-S Liberty Head double eagle, struck during the early post–Civil War expansion of Western mining as San Francisco transformed newly mined California and Nevada gold into commerce-ready coinage, is represented here by an especially attractive Choice AU58 example that borders on Mint State quality. Both sides radiate strong remaining luster that flows smoothly across the fields into beautiful golden-apricot hue. While the 1870-S is obtainable in lower circulated grades due to overseas exportation and later foreign bank hoard repatriations which only still amount to 4,892 pieces today in all grades. Choice AU pieces such as this are notably scarcer, and CAC endorsement further elevates this example as a premium, borderline Mint State representative of a San Francisco issue that remains genuinely elusive in full Uncirculated preservation. Underrated Double Eagle San Francisco day.
