CAC 1/0, ex Gardner Collection, and The Second Finest 1870 Liberty Half Dollar, surpassed by only 1 MS67 NON-CAC impounded in the DLH collection with no other 65+,66 or 66+. Philly mint 1870 50c are typically seen well struck; however Philly Mint 50c are incredibly rare in mint state. This coin, beside being the Second Finest, is unique because it is the finest CAC certified 1870 50C and more importantly, because of its " Brilliant interiors turn to concentric bands of russet, violet, blue, and green at the margins, giving each thickly frosted and boldly struck side a tremendous amount of aesthetic appeal. " Throw away any Price Guide ( $12,500) or comps (none exist) for this ex Gene Gardner's coin will be a center piece to any collection.

Gene Gardner's commentary from Heritage Auction: "A wonderful coin from the Lawrence Gardner (Buffalo and Erie Historical Society) collection. There is some light album toning all around the rims on both sides, and the coin is fully lustrous. I rate it strong for the grade. The fields are completely free from any hairlines. Each service has come up with one MS67, but I bet this coin would give all of them a good run for their money."

ex Gardner Collection $9,987.50 as a MS65 PCGS CAC 10/2015 HA.

ex Buffalo and Erie Historical Society Collection (Stack's, 3/2005), lot 226.
