Three Dollar
In 1853, Congress had passed a bill that authorized the issuance of three-dollar coins in order for a more convenient purchase of postage stamps. Though somewhat circulated on the West Coast, where hard gold and silver were used rather than paper money, it had little commerce on the East Coast because of its disruption from the Civil War.
This 1870 $3 piece is an exciting specimen, possessing a visually striking Chrome Yellow patina. It is one of just 3,500 struck and of 800 remaining survivors. An important $3 and a rare gold date, seldom seen in higher grades. This date typically offers low eye appeal, but this specimen truly rectifies what a $3 rare gold should look like. It will undoubtedly catch the eye of a choosy collector, a fantastic Gem, save for a small planchet flaw on the obverse. This date has seen a surge in value.
