1868 $3 AU58 PCGS CAC
The 1868 Three Dollar Gold is a scarce late-date issue from one of the shortest-lived and most challenging series in American numismatics. With a modest mintage of just 4,850 pieces and an estimated 1,250 survivors across all grades, the issue remains elusive, particularly in attractive, original condition. This beautiful AU example possesses outstanding eye appeal, displaying rich orange-gold color accented by warm honey-gold patina and abundant reflective mint luster that flashes brightly when rotated under the light. The coin is boldly struck with only the slightest evidence of circulation. The combination of strong strike, vibrant luster, and exceptionally original surfaces gives this scarce issue an unmistakable Gem-AU appearance. No CAC example has sold for almost a decade; however, non-CAC examples sell for approximately $6,000, whilst CAC stands with a Price Guide of $9,000.
