One of the rarest San Francisco Half Eagles, 1867-S $5 has an estimated 75 known in all grades. With a Price Guide of $4,000 and no sale for almost a decade, the only partially relevant comp is a non-cac XF45 for $4,080 10/21 HA, whilst 3 grades below a NGC VF25 CAC sold 02/22 HA for $2,880. With increased demand for S-Mint Half Eagles more so for rare dates, prices have been increasing many folds. For this issue, finding an example much less a PCGS CAC example finer than the offered will cost at least 5 figures. As an XF40, this coin has a Dirty Old Gold ( DOG) look and is indeed very crusty looking. No hits or dings are noted and the coin has an attractive orange-fiery patina.
