A pattern coin is a prototype or experimental coin that is struck to test new designs, compositions, or minting processes. These coins are typically produced in limited numbers and are not intended for circulation but to evaluate the aesthetics, durability, and practicality of new designs before full-scale production. This $5 coin originated from the proof dies used for the Liberty gold piece. However, it was struck in copper with a reeded edge. It is probable that the coin was minted as part of an exclusive collector copper set, available only to a select few. Alternatively, there is a belief that these coins might have been produced for the sole purpose of testing the coinage in a different alloy. Fewer than six of these pieces are in existence. This coin was once part of the Simpson collection. This coin represents the highest-grade J-599 pattern proof $5 coin, a copper trial struck from regular 1867 proof dies. It holds a rarity rating of 7+, and only a few examples are known to date. When you hold this coin in your hand, you will quickly understand why it is considered the finest. The mirrors are remarkably deep, clean, and entirely free of any marks. The iridescent colors—red, chartreuse, green, purple, and gold—dance under the light at various angles, creating a breathtaking depth of colors. The vibrancy is so evident that the coin shines even when placed flat, without the need for angulation or additional light. Every detail is impeccably struck, standing out boldly above the mirrors. The contrast is exceptional, and the eye appeal is beyond measure, easily earning an eleven on a scale of one to ten!
