The 1865-S Liberty Head $20 double eagle was struck at the San Francisco Mint during the final year of the Civil War, when gold coinage remained essential to commerce on the West Coast and many pieces saw extensive circulation or export, leaving relatively few high-end survivors. This AU58 example presents a pleasing near-Mint appearance, with both sides displaying a bright, original yellow-gold foundation accented by soft orange and light honey undertones that remain consistent across the surfaces. The fields are notably clean for the grade with plenty of cartwheel luster. Overall, this is a visually appealing San Francisco Mint issue that offers strong eye appeal and originality for the grade, making it an excellent representative of this late Civil War-era Type One double eagle. CAC Price Guide $6,750 with no recent auction comps.
