The 1865-S Liberty Head eagle, Type 2 No Motto, is a rare and highly coveted Civil War–era San Francisco issue, with a mintage of just 16,700 and a survival estimate of approximately 27 pieces in all grades! The Normal Date variety offered here is notably scarcer than the overdate "inverted 186". Interestingly, the better-known blundered or inverted date variety was not identified until about 20 years ago, raising the possibility that some pre-1960 auction records actually represent the inverted date rather than the Normal Date seen here, and make this date actually significantly rarer. In this VF30, just a single auction for PCGS CAC is recorded at $17,400 08/23 ST, hence PCGS has a Price Guide of $17,500 today. This example offers premium quality, originality, and exceptional visual appeal. The obverse and reverse glows with vivid honey-gold hues, enhanced by warm orange-rose overtones. Very few scattered abrasions are noted for the type, considering the other PCGS CAC example that sold in 2023 had a big scratch mark on the neck and in our opinion should not have CAC. This is an incredibly rare offering. Considering how there are only 7 CAC approved in all grades, and these quickly climb up to 6 figures in AU58, we cant recommend this example enough.
