Key date is often overused, but in a series such as liberty half eagles with over a hundred, 1865 $5 stands out as special. From a mintage of just 1,270, no more than 35 exist today in any grade and from both grading companies. The last au55 sold exactly 20 years ago in 1999, as did a single au58. As such one would expect as well a small number of cac certified 1865. The total of which is 4 in all graded extant. This coin is the second finest cac surpassed by one cac in ms locked up. Whilst no relevant comp exists, one grade lower non cac au53 is selling for $21,500, whilst an ngc ms61 slider non cac for $37,600 01/17. If a collector or investor so desires a near finest choice original 1865 philadelphia mint $5 this is the best available option. The example is totally fresh, un-messed with with yellow-greenish hue with substantial luster for an au example. A few copper spots are noted near the date only the add validity to the behemoth of character and rarity this date represents.
