The 1865 Two Cent Piece Plain 5, certified RD, is a beautifully preserved and highly attractive Civil War-era copper issue that combines exceptional technical quality with vibrant original color and strong eye appeal. Both obverse and reverse display rich copper-red surfaces accented by intense satiny mint luster that radiates evenly across the fields and devices. The surfaces remain impressively clean and expertly preserved with outstanding visual harmony throughout. Struck during the second year of the short-lived two-cent series, the 1865 was produced in two major varieties, Plain 5 and Fancy 5, with this example representing the Plain 5 variety. The Plain 5 is about 20% rarer than Fancy 5 last 66 RD CAC as per the Price Guide. Fully Red examples, however, become increasingly elusive in upper Gem preservation, with any examples finer than MS65 RD recognized as significant condition rarities. Near the top of the population reports, PCGS has certified only 8 examples at this level with 6 finer, while CAC has approved just 6 examples with none finer.
