One will hardly find a more rare and high grade gold dollar than this 1864 MS68 OGH monster. No doubt the second finest 1864 Gold Dollar. 1864 is by no standards whatsoever a common date. From a minuscule mintage of 5,900 only 125 pieces are known today in all grades and conditions. Even in lower grades these fetch thousands unlike a common date like 1851 G$1 with over 11,000 known today where in lower conditions these trades for $300-$400, whilst an 1851 MS68+ PCGS CAC just sold for $108,000. This 1864 G$1 was completely unknown to the numismatic market for over 2 decades when it was slabbed until a small local charity auction where it was snapped by an astute collector whom we purchased this from. The obverse and reverse glooming and gleaming with mint luster absolutely screaming of raw beauty and color over mint-made striations. Comparing this example to the Duckor example we absolutely believe this example has more eye appeal and luster, which at the hefty MS68, MS68+, MS69 that is perhaps most important. Various colors are seen on the coin from teal gold, majestic purple hues to sun yellow and everything in between. This coin will not disappoint to even the most picky of collectors. Likely under-graded by today's MS68 standard and a great investment.
