- This 1863-S Liberty Head Half Eagle represents one of the most elusive circulation-strike gold issues from the Civil War era, with a mintage of just 17,000 pieces and an estimated survival of only about 55 coins in all grades! The rarity is further compounded by the issue’s extremely low certification population and the scarcity of problem-free survivors, making any attractive and original piece a significant acquisition opportunity. This example exhibits a warm and natural color palette characteristic of mid-19th-century San Francisco gold. The surfaces show a deep yellow-gold foundation that transitions into richer orange-gold and muted honey accents within protected area. Even more interesting there are only 6 approved CAC in all grades - this example with 5 finer ( one in VF35 then jumping straight to AU) No CAC-approved example has sold in VF25 though CAC quotes a Price Guide of $8,250, and auction activity is sparse - only 1 CAC example has ever sold publicly, an AU55. This coin is an old friend that we sold about a 6 years ago and was recently sold back to us. People use terms like sleeper date, but this coin is that, and finding this date CAC under $10,000 is another rarity in itself.
