The 1862-S Liberty Seated Quarter with a modest mintage of just 67,000 pieces, stands as one of the most challenging Civil War–era issues from the early San Francisco Mint. This offering represents an exceptional Mint State survivor that is never seen above low AU. San Francisco Seated quarters of this period were subjected to heavy circulation, and with no contemporary numismatic premium placed on mintmarked coinage, virtually all examples were spent, leaving only a handful of high-grade coins to survive largely by chance; in Mint State, the issue is classified at the R-6 level by Larry Briggs in his comprehensive reference on the series. The surfaces display rich warm chestnut and medium-brown copper hues blended seamlessly with soft steel-gray and slate undertones. Coins of this caliber are seldom encountered and the most relevant auction comp for a PCGS CAC is a lower graded AU58 PCGS CAC for $6,000 01/25 HA and an AU53 PCGS CAC $4,219 03/22 GC. With a CAC pop of 1 and 5 finer all in MS63 none of which have sold for over 7 years these are incredibly tough.
