Liberty Head Double Eagle
Couldn't load pickup availability
The 1862-S Liberty Head Double Eagle is a rare and historically important offering within the Type I series, struck during the height of the Civil War at the San Francisco Mint. While its mintage of 849,500 may suggest moderate availability, this issue is notoriously difficult to locate in original, problem-free condition, especially in mid-circulated grades. In fact, no CAC example has sold in a while, which contributes to the current CAC Price Guide of $5,250. The coin offered here is a wonderfully original example that exudes vintage charm. The obverse exhibits a mellow yellow-gold base, with honey-bronze and olive-gold undertones tracing the rims and star borders. Luster is soft and muted, but still glimmers faintly in recessed areas. Altogether, this 1862-S $20 Double Eagle is an exceptional representative of one of the most underappreciated Type I dates, with outstanding originality, and a clear link to Civil War-era monetary history. It is a superb acquisition at substantially under CAC Price Guide for the collector focused on authenticity, preservation, and historical depth within the Liberty Head Double Eagle series.
