This 1861-O Liberty Seated Half Dollar, graded FR02 by NGC, represents a poignant artifact from the outbreak of the Civil War—struck at the New Orleans Mint after the facility was seized by Confederate forces. Notably, the dramatic die crack running from the rim at 12 o’clock through Liberty’s nose confirms its attribution to this historic transitional period, making it a sought-after subtype among advanced collectors. Despite its heavy circulation, the coin retains bold originality and undeniable visual character. The obverse is framed by a vibrant multicolored toning halo, ranging from amber-gold and tangerine to crimson and violet, surrounding a smooth, pewter-gray field where Liberty’s silhouette remains fully discernible. The reverse shows moderate definition in the eagle and shield, with soft golden and lavender accents emerging across the worn surfaces. The “O” mintmark is bold and well-centered. As a lowball-certified piece, this coin holds unique appeal for both type specialists and collectors pursuing historically significant Civil War-era coinage. No sale record in this FR02 grade and AG03 sales are also extremely limited, with only two recorded sales: one NGC-certified example realized $216 10/18 DL and a PCGS AG03 brought $493 02/22 DL.
