1860-S $5 AU58 PCGS CAC

Pre-Civil War San Francisco Issue, 1860-S $5 is a very important piece for any $5 collection. Because of the looming war, these dates are incredibly rare and most were melted and did not survive. Only 50 are known today in all grades, with only 2 UNC. At AU58 with a PCGS Pop 4 and NO CAC APR ever, non-cac PCGS AU58, one unique example is the only one that sold in the past 2 decade for $17,500 04/19 previously $19,975 at HA which has no luster for an AU58. We believe the PCGS Pop inflated and at AU58 likely a POP 2 or 3 at most. This present example is clearly one of the finest known, in fact it is Tied for Third Finest. The two finer have not sold in the past 2 decade. PCGS Price Guide $27,500 for this AU58 and CAC Value $28,800. Only 1 CAC example is certified finer and as you can guess that is locked up. The current specimen is sharply struck with luster peeking through. The reverse also choice and just the tiniest of wear apparently hold this coin from an UNC grade. We can see this bring a record price, and given its rarity we think this opportunity will not arise again.
