1859-D $5 MEDIUM D AU50 PCGS
1859-D $5 MEDIUM D AU50 PCGS
Liberty Head Half Eagle
Important second lowest mintage Dahlonega Half Eagle, 1859-D $5 from a mintage of just 10,366, approximately 165 are known today in all grades, excluding Large D variety which according to PCGS estimates only 10 in total. So 1859-D $5 is the only collectable Dahlonega variety from 1859 for all intents and purpose. With a PCGS Price Guide of $6500 and a wholesale Greysheet bid of $4,400, 1859-D $5 can be found in XF or lower grade. In AU50 this coin becomes incredibly rare and sought after. Unfortunately all 1859-D $5 are plagued by weakness in strike seen all have beveled like appearance. Thus finding one with good eye appeal is impossible. In fact finding an example with no abrasions all over the surface like the present example and with original orange-gold patina with mark-free surface and high eye appeal is incredibly rare. No AU50 PCGS example has sold in over a decade, like wise for the next grade up. Though a lower graded NON-CAC PCGS VF35 sold for $4,320 08/22.
